It's that time again. That time of year when I may have things to do for work, things to do for school, and things to do with the family, but all I can think of is what needs to be done in the yard. We've been so busy lately that my spring chores have had to be done sporadically. It's also too cold outside to get everything planted out already so I have to resist the urge to plant everything right now. I had most of today to work in the yard despite the chilly weather, so I'm feeling much better about my to-do list. Things that got done this weekend: clean the leaves out of the yard on the north side of the house that have been blown there over the fall and winter, plant new clematis vines in the backyard, clean up the veggie garden on the south side of the house and plant onions (this includes cleaning out the leaves blown there over winter), mowing, creating a flower bed under that birch tree where I dug up a bush and some grass last fall, fix the fence around the south side veggie bed, plant bulbs in the front yard and transplant some plants that don't like where they are growing. Phew, I think that was it! It was a very busy day, but there is still more left to do. I still need to move a few more plants and start fixing the raspberry trellis, but considering all I wanted to do this weekend, I'll forgive myself for not getting it all done!

| The crocus are always I nice sight in spring. They don't last long as they are a favorite of rabbits, but I love to see them even briefly |
| The catmint is always the first out in spring so I'm sure it won't be long before it blooms |
| The first asparagus of the season! These were a little bitter when eaten fresh, but the asparagus from the next day was better |
| The columbine has never looked this good, I don't know if it's its age or the conditions, but I'm hoping for a great bloom |
| After cleaning up all the leaves in this bed, I planted some heuchera to grow between the hostas. Hopefully that fills out the bed nicely |
| I finished making this flower bed which I was really happy to get done today. In the fall, I shaped the bed, took out an over-grown bush, and took up some sod. I replaced the sod upside-down to kill the grass so I just had to clean up the dead grass (put that in the raspberries), add some compost/soil and start planting. My problem with this bed will be that the tree roots are pretty shallow so I'll have to plant things that don't have deep roots and hope that they roots can make their way around the tree. It looks so good right now that I hope it turns out to be my favorite bed! |
| The front yard is looking great, too bad I think my azaleas didn't make it. Keep your fingers crossed that they turn from dead-brown to healthy green soon, but don't hold your breath |
| Started hardening off some of the flowers that I grew from seed. With luck, I can plant them out next week or the week after that |
| I have way to many plants waiting to be planted outside. And of course I want way more so I have to remind myself to show restraint. It's like going to a buffet and filling two plants full when you know your stomach can only handle one...or a half |
| Hopefully there will be big (and good) changes to this bed. I added a clematis vine to hopefully grow up the screen, I moved the salvia and replaced it with cone flower, and I plan to move/divide the sedum and liriope too. I have some mystery plants growing in here now that I'm really, really hoping are cone flower since I broadcast some seeds in the fall, but they could be anything |
| I'll eventually move these to a flower bed instead of right next to the deck where everyone walks |
